FOUNDATION LAUNCHES VSLA INITIATIVE IN HILL CUT COMMUNITY

The Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation has extended its Village Savings and Loan Association (VSLA) initiative to the Hill Cut community, one of Freetown's most vulnerable areas. The program, launched yesterday by the foundation’s field staff, aims to empower widows by providing them with a platform to save money, access loans, and improve their livelihoods.

Field staff members Cornelia Thompson and Solomon Temgbeh led the launch, explaining the benefits of the initiative and urging widows to actively participate. “This initiative has transformed the lives of widows in other communities,” said Cornelia Thompson. “It’s not just about saving money; it’s about building a supportive community where widows can find financial and emotional strength.”

Solomon Temgbeh emphasized the importance of commitment to the program. “We encourage you to take this opportunity seriously. Through this initiative, widows like you have started businesses, supported their families, and regained hope for the future,” he noted.

The charlady of the Hill Cut community welcomed the foundation’s team and expressed gratitude for their efforts. “The Jamil and Nyanga Jaward Foundation is the only organization focused on helping widows like us. Your support gives us hope, and we promise to take this initiative seriously,” she said. She also prayed for the foundation’s continued success, adding, “May you continue to grow and bring light to more communities.”

Helena F. E. Dania, the community chief and a respected pastor, also attended the event, offering encouragement to the widows and gratitude to the foundation. She described the initiative as a blessing to the community and urged the widows to fully embrace the program, emphasizing its potential to transform lives. Expressing gratitude

After the launch, the widows began saving immediately, marking the start of a program that has already proven successful in other areas. The VSLA initiative is one of the foundation’s key strategies to empower widows and less privileged women, giving them the tools to create sustainable livelihoods.

With its expansion to Hill Cut, the foundation continues to demonstrate its commitment to reducing inequality and uplifting vulnerable communities across Freetown.
